Dr. Gershom The Magic of a Meaningful and Joyful Life |
Dr. Gershom Jochanan Kloens (b. 1965) is an award-winning PhD in clinical and healthcare psychology.
His motto is: Yes to life, despite of everything. According to him, saying yes to life implies a personal search for meaning and thus joy in one's life.
Dr. Gershom is married to Gilah and a father of six children. He lives in Israel. He studied at the Universities of Leiden, Groningen, Oxford, and Stanford. He works as a therapist, a supervisor in cognitive behavioral therapy, a relationship and family therapist, and a sexologist in several clinics for mental health care in the Netherlands (online & on location). Since 1998, he teaches cognitive behavioral therapy and couple therapy for post-MA students. He also worked as a manager for many years in mental health care and project manager for various organizations. As a representative of the Dutch professional association of psychologists (NIP), he once contributed to the development of modern healthcare standards.
In the Netherlands he is known for his inspiring lectures and workshops on themes such as love, relationship quality and personality and his contributions in regional and national newspapers, and for television.
Dr. Gershom received a Professional Lustrum Award from his professional association NIP in 2003 and received his doctorate in 2005.
In 2014, together with Gilah, he published a handbook on love and relationship quality, followed by books on sustainable love relationships (2015), love (2017), and recovery in mental health care (2022). These four books are written in Dutch.
In the autumn/winter of 2024 Dr. Gershom will publish his fifth book A Life of Meaning and Joy: In Search of Social Identity Man. This is an international publication by Pomerantz Jerusalem.
His personal life and work is highly influenced by the philosophies and works of Rav. Joseph Ber Soloveitchik, Victor Frankl and Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks. He loves studying, Shabbat with family & friends, reading books, hiking in the mountains, listening to music and cycling.
