Jewish Life #47. Auschwitz Remembrance Day

This week no blog about the parashah of the week, but a reflection on the Auschwitz Memorial Day, January 27, 2025. 
 
80 years after the liberation of Auschwitz by Russian soldiers, we commemorate the atrocities that took place in this concentration and extermination camp. More than 1 million people were murdered there by the Nazis. In total, more than 6 million Jews were murdered by the Nazis in WWII. 
This year I was in the City Hall of Dordrecht, the Netherlands, my town and country of my youth, for this special Memorial Day. It was a dignified and special commemoration.

​​After the memorial, my beloved aunt, who was also present, pointed out these four Stolpersteine, so-called stumbling stones. These four stones in memory of Philip Jacob Braadbaart, Kaatje Braadbaart-Breemer, Betje Son-Braadbaart and Rozetta Braadbaart, turned out to be located in front of my first house in Dordrecht, Voorstraat 271. A shocking discovery that I lived in a Jewish house, of which the residents were deported and murdered in Sobibor in 1943. [Night-No words-Where was human?]. The house was taken over by a family after the war and rented to my parents in the sixties.
